Beat the Heat

June 29, 2018

BEAT THE HEAT THIS SUMMER

July through September are the hottest months in Florida.  We’ve gathered some great ways to cool off and enjoy the great indoors on the Treasure Coast.

Theatre Night Out

This year the Vero Beach Theatre Guild will start its season early.  The Dixie Swim Club, a touching comedy about friendships that last forever, will open on July 10. In September, enjoy the edge-of-your-seat 9/11 conspiracy thriller Yankee Tavern opening on September 11 of course! www.verobeachtheatreguild.com

Free Matinees

Why pay for movies when you can head over to Sunrise Theatre and see them for free?  The smash hit Mamma Mia! Is playing in July followed by the darkly comic drama, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri. In August, check out The Greatest Showman starring Hugh Jackman as the legendary P.T. Barnum. The Sci-Fi adventure A Wrinkle in Time is also showing in August followed by Guillermo del Toro’s dark drama, The Shape of Water.  All movies are at 3 pm. Visit the website for dates.  www.sunrisetheatre.com

Vegas in Vero

Riverside Theatre is back with the ever-popular Vegas Nights. Every weekend in July features Las Vegas Style casino night parties with live entertainment inside and outside the theatre.  Play a game of blackjack, try your luck at the craps tables or get a lucky hand at poker.  Play with the theatre’s funny money then cash in the winnings for a chance at some great prizes!  The fun continues with stand-up comedy or a dueling pianos show.  Festivities start at 6 pm and shows are at 7:30 and 9:30 pm.  www.riversidetheatre.com

Hands-on History

The National Navy SEAL Museum is the only museum dedicated solely to preserving the history of the United States Navy SEALs and their predecessors. The latest exhibit following some renovations is the new World War II Gallery featuring interactive touch-screen installations, vehicles, and vessels.  Learn more about the “Frogmen”, born on the beaches of Fort Pierce of where the Navy SEAL Museum stands. To get any closer you would have to enlist!  www.navysealmuseum.org

Indoor Star Gazing

The next best thing to a planetarium is the latest exhibit at Vero Beach Museum of Art.  Astronomy Photographer of the Year features approximate fifty photographs of celestial spectacle chosen from this world-wide photo competition.  Visitors to the exhibition will see images such as Mercury crossing the sun in Lancashire, UK, the Aurora Borealis reflected on the sea in Iceland, and a starry sky over the glacier ‘White Stones’ in Argentina. www.vbmuseum.org

Marine Science Immersion

If you’re wild about marine life, put Florida Atlantic University’s Ocean Discover Visitor’s Center on your list.  Learn about important research through beautiful exhibits and interpretive tours led by a marine scientist.  On Wednesdays take an “immersion tour” for a behind the scenes look at their 144-acre waterfront campus while learning about the organization’s history and current research efforts. Select Wednesdays feature fascinating lectures on the most recent discoveries from scientists, engineers and students who made them. www.fau.edu/hboi
